The Seven Faces of Evil By Chaumont Devin Honolulu, May 28, 2002. "The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom." --Solomon. "Wisdom begins when we dare trash all our old fears and replace them with a genuine respect for truth--what really is instead of what we have been told or imagined. Before I learned to respect truth above all else I had no wisdom." --Chaumont Devin. Prolog. In this work I will show that mankind is currently undergoing a major evolutionary innovation, howbeit one that is not primarily of the body but of the mind. I will describe this innovation, show how it is being artificially kept from coming to full bloom, and explain why we must either embrace it quickly or die. Some may take exception with me for writing of our ills, but isn't it true that this is really the concoction we best love? And how can I, poor mortal that I am, hope to sell any of my words except I write what people love? Like others, I crave money, notariety, and fame, so I am determined now to tell you all I know as I best can. "Man, on the whole, does not want to choose; he wants to have the feeling that he ought to do this or that according to a code laid down by authority." --Abraham Myerson. "Nature never appeals to intelligence until habit and instinct are useless." --H. G. Wells. In the following pages two kinds of creature will emerge. The first is an automaton that makes its way through the world by comparing everything it sees and hears to a kind of superlibrary of platitudes, sayings, and other snippets of wisdom. Among these it finds matches, which it processes against the real world in order to determine its next course of action or step. The second is a machine that really thinks. It also has a sort of library of wisdom, but when it finds matches with the real world, instead of just shoving these into some kind of rough-and-ready processor and moving on, it adds the match to the store of information it has been gathering, keeps looking for unnoticed details, then critically evaluates the whole. Its next step does not depend solely upon the matches it has found in its library of wisdom. In fact it may reject them all out of hand in favor of some new thought it has been able to synthesize from the available information. This second automaton is a prototype for the kind of human machinery I am trying to develop in my readers, because it is only people capable of looking at reality and really seeing what is out there in this way who stand any chance of saving the world--otherwise we are lost. "Mankind must see clearly in order to rid itself of unnecessary suffering." --Abraham Myerson. An important goal will also emerge, and this is to debunk a host of false propositions that tend to get lodged in one's library of wisdom, and thus to unmercifully drive the great masses of humans who belong to the first category of automata described above. In many cases it may be impossible to make people really think, but at least we may be able to alleviate the perpetual sufferings of mankind and of this planet somewhat by debunking the most dangerous snippets of false wisdom now happily lodged in our minds. Another goal will be to make the reader aware of the importance of truth, and the hidden dangers lurking in seemingly innocent lies. This may sound trivial, but in fact it is not, since most of us have been assiduously taught to lie from the time we were children. True, when our mothers have caught us lying they may have washed our mouths out with soap, but at the same time we have been told to tell the truth, we may also have been taught to lie in a hundred other subtler, more powerful ways. In fact, I don't think I have ever met a human being much beyond infancy who has not somehow been taught to tell lies, or at least to accept or believe them. So the very foundations of our lives may be a veritable litany of lies, any one of which is dangerous because there is no such thing as a safe lie. "The profoundest instinct in man is to war against the truth; that is, against the Real. He shuns facts from his infancy. His life is a perpetual evasion. Miracle, chimera and to-morrow keep him alive. He lives on fiction and myth. It is the Lie that makes him free. Animals alone are given the privilege of lifting the veil of Isis; men dare not. The animal, awake, has no fictional escape from the Real because he has no imagination. Man, awake, is compelled to seek a perpetual escape into Hope, Belief, Fable, Art, God, Socialism, Immortality, Alcohol, Love." --Jack London. Lies warp and twist our minds into dangerous paths, and this is the reason we have wars and find ourselves forced to make war in order to defend ourselves from wars. Is the human race essentially insane? Of course it is. Just read history. No sane creature could possibly do the things we have done. Human intelligence is haphazard and new, and has a long, long way to go along the evolutionary path. It is being developed, debugged, and perfected all the time, and right now the main focus of this process is still upon human violence, where we have been stuck for the last few thousand years. We are creatures of incredible violence, and this violence must be curbed ere we can go on. At this moment man hangs in the balance. All of the world's scientific research could still be blown up by some kind of coordinated terrorist attack before tomorrow. 100 suitcase-sized nuclear bombs have gone missing in Russia, and this may be only the tip of the iceberg. Islamic fanaticism doesn't happen to be showing its anti-scientific side just now, but it has definitely done so before, and is primed soon to do it again. Islam has been viewed as benign because it bears the sacred stamp of religion, but the erstwhile threat of Communism will probably seem as nothing before the Moslems have done. So man may continue to evolve, or he may be cut short by this evolutionary experiment we call the mind, which surely has no guarantee of evolutionary success any more than did the armor of the dinosaurs. Recall that the same intelligence that brought us up from the stone age has also given us our fanatical delusions and the religions that bedevil our minds. "Truth is not a popular thing." --Greig Win. "The world owes its progress to those whose anger, sustained and intellectualized, becomes the power behind reform." --Abraham Myerson. Anger is often thought of as madness or violence, but in fact it is not. It can be a natural infusion of boldness that gives us the courage to challenge foolishness, shake off the intolerable, and move on. Anger against British imperialism got us freedom from England. Anger against slavery got us abolition. It is sad that anger against unreasoning superstition and tradition has not got us psychological freedom and control of our minds. Pray when will we stop chasing our tails in the dust and reach for the stars? Chapter 1. What Are Good and Evil? Just what is evil? Evil exists only as the parasite of good, nor can evil exist where there is no good. As an example, suppose we perceive strength as being good. Then weakness is evil, and exists only as the parasite of strength, and cannot exist where there is no strength, etc. Intangible examples of good and evil include the following: Truth, falsehood. Honesty, deceit. Strength, weakness. Courage, cowardice. Love, hate. Honor, dishonor. Mercy, cruelty. Purity, sin. Health, illness. Wisdom, folly. Knowledge, ignorance. But although the basic ideas of good and evil are themselves abstractions, and may apply most powerfully to abstract things, they are not necessarily limited to the world of thought alone. Thus, for example, if Cheeze is a desirable thing, and mold is an undesirable parasite that grows upon cheeze and takes away from its substance, then mold is an evil and cheeze is a good. Or if pure steel is desirable, and rust exists as an undesirable parasite upon pure steel, then rust is an evil and pure steel is a good. Yet the thing that is evil to one person may be good to another, and therefore, at least as far as material things are concerned, it is not always possible to determine absolutely what is evil or good. As an example, to the man who is sharpening his knife, pure steel is good, and rust is an evil to be ground away. But to a man trying to produce iron oxide, say in order to be used as a magnetic recording medium, the iron oxide is good, whereas any particles of unoxidized steel are bad. From the above analysis it may be gathered that good and evil are essentially nonmaterial entities that can be easily recognized in their pure and abstract forms, but which may be confused when seen in physical objects and substances. So here, although far less ambiguous than the nonmaterial list above, are some material things that are generally seen as good and evil: Warmth, coldness. Coolness, heat. Sweetness, sourness or bitterness. Pure steel, rust. Cheeze, mold. Clean floors, dirty floors. Dry earth, mud. Perfume, body odor. Clean walls, graffiti. Green grass, weeds. Notice that in this last list, many people might perceive some of the things I have called "good" as being evil, and vice versa. For example, some may prefer graffiti to "clean" walls, and perceive bare walls as something evil. Thus although it is possible to define evil as a parasite of good that cannot exist without good, it is more difficult to define good, which may mean different things to different people. But this is still fortunate for me, since I am writing about evil, and not about good. I may not be able to define good, but I can certainly define evil, because evil can only exist as a parasite upon good, no matter what one may perceive as being good. Chapter 2. Falsehood, the Worst Evil, and Sophistry, Its Handmaid. But if any evil can be defined as a parasite upon some good, and cannot exist without the presence of that good, then truth must be good because falsehood is a parasite upon truth and cannot exist anywhere without truth. And since truth lies at the very foundation of everything we have ever known about the universe, it may be said that reality itself is based entirely upon truth, and therefore that truth must be the most important good in the entire universe. As an example, take any proposition about the physical universe, such as Einstein's famous E=MC^2. This statement is either true or else it is not. If it is true, then it will work when applied to the physical universe, but if it is false it will not. We assume it is true because it has been proven correct in all cases we have been able to observe. Thus in common with many other similar propositions, E=MC^2 must be part of the truth upon which our universe has been constructed. So if truth is the most important good in our universe, upon which its very existence must clearly depend, then the perversion of truth must be the worst evil--not murder, not rape, not sexual perversion, but mere falsehood. Yet this may be hard to believe, for which one of us has never put on some false pretense or told some "white lie?" Is it possible, then, that something as commonplace as mere falsehood could be this monstrous evil? We shall see. Falsehood is insidious, and doubly so because those who begin by lying often end up believing their own lies. Thus, once an individual or a group of people have agreed with themselves or with each other upon some falsehood, there is a heavy price to be paid in terms of maintaining normal psychological equilibrium, and hence sanity. Just like an addiction to drugs, the telling and believing of lies works profound changes upon the human psyche. Most children in Christian households have heard that it is a sin to tell a lie, but many Christian adults do not know that it is written that those who love a lie will be excluded from the city of god (Rev. 22:15). In the following pages I hope to show why it is just as evil to believe a lie as to tell one. "people are prone to believe in the reality of the things they think ought to be so." --Jack London. * How to recognize lies. One way to recognize lies is that most of them come well hidden in bundles of truth. When a man wants to poison and rob you, he doesn't usually hand you a glas of straight cyanid. Instead, he mixes an infinitesimal trace of arsenic with a glass of fresh orange juice and bids you join in a toast to prosperity and long life. Many of the lies that rule the world can be classed as those of sophistry, which means "plausable but misleading argument." Pay special attention to abstract nouns that have been formed from verbs to which some kind of universal meaning has been attached. Such nouns include the following: * Violence. You see someone club your mother and snatch her purse at a bus stop and you kill him. You are automatically wrong, because killing is a form of VIOLENCE, and all VIOLENCE is automatically evil. * Rape. Some young girl offers you sex and you take it, and it turns out she is 17 instead of 18, so you have RAPED er. *Sexual Harassment. You say something to an unreceptive woman who does not look quite unreceptive, and you become guilty of SEXUAL HARASSMENT. * Unbelief. You can't quite see how everything your pastor, priest, or rabbi tells you might be true, so you are an UNBELIEVER and a SINNER bound for HELL. Notice how in every case above except for that of "rape," the noun is taken from some verb or springs from some concept of action which might be either good OR bad, altered slightly so that it can only mean the bad, and then applied to something irrelevant. The same thing can be done to make bad things look right. For example: * Love. Love is good, and hatred is evil. After the movie, I let Charly screw me in the back seat 'cause I LOVE him. The trick is to find some noun for an action, get it accepted as either always good or always bad, and then use it to justify the wrong meaning. * Terrorism. In 2020, the Chinese empire annexes America, and the Chinese governor of California entertains himself by raping movie stars. By some unknown means, Dick Tracy gets into the palace, drags the governor out of bed, and holds him at knifepoint. He forces the governor to give his harem safe conduct to India, which has not yet fallen to the Chinese, then stabs the governor to death when they are gone. Dick Tracy is found guilty of TERRORISM, and publicly executed upon a stake set up on stage in the Hollywood Bowl. * Euphemism. Another important tool of falsehood is euphemism. A euphemism is an expression that sounds good or only moderately bad that is used in place of the truth. The advantage of the euphemism is again that it SEEMS to tell the truth when it doesn't. Examples are: * Illness or Problem. Correspondence has recently been brought to light in which a Roman Catholic Archbishop writes to his subordinate parish priest about molesting children. The archbishop, who is covering up for the DEAR parish priest, writes of the priest's ILLNESS and PROBLEM. Instead of stating clearly that the parish priest is sexually abusing children, the children are never mentioned and the priest is said to have an illness or problem when in fact it is the priest who is creating the problem. * Refugees. The Republic of Indonesia forces .25 million people out of their homeland of East Timor and into Indonesian prison camps at gunpoint. Many are tortured and murdered at sea, and the women are repeatedly raped in the prison camp, but the international press calls them REFUGEES and not HOSTAGES. This is an excellent example of the deliberate and calculated use of euphemism to deceive. To the average man, who never encounters either in real life, it is apparently easy to confuse the ideas of HOSTAGE and REFUGEE, so that REFUGEE is allowed to stand. The consequences of allowing this lie to stand have been most terrible for the people of East Timor. I wonder how any American senator and his wife and children would like being held hostage in a similar situation and then forgotten as "refugees," or "part of the international refugee problem." * Religious Strife. It is reported that the Islamic Jihad has driven .5 million people out of the Moluccas, slaughtering between five and ten thousand persons in the process. This carefully crafted jihad against Moluccan Christians is funded by Middle-Eastern Arabs and top Indonesian government officials. Assault rifles, grenades, and mortars are brought in to destroy the unarmed and peaceful Christian population. Instead of calling this an Islamist terrorist attack, the international press calls it "religious strife." Euphemism is probably one of the most dangerous forms of deception because it can produce so much evil for such a seemingly insignificant and seemingly innocent effort. Human beings are naturally averse to confrontation, and naturally love the glib euphemism as soon as it is introduced, and the untrained and undiciplined mind simply cannot see the dark shadow of its consequences. * Conditioning and Tradition. "Lies need only age to make them respectable. Given that, they become traditions and are put upon a pedestal. Then the gentlest word for him who attacks them is traitor." --William Raine. "Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." --Solomon. "When even the brightest mind in our world has been trained up from childhood in a superstition of any kind, it will never be possible for that mind, in its maturity, to examine sincerely, dispassionately, and conscientiously any evidence or any circumstance which shall seem to cast a doubt upon the validity of that superstition. . . . "Whenever we have been furnished a fetish, and have been taught to believe in it, and love it and worship it, and refrain from examining it, there is no evidence, howsoever clear and strong, that can persuade us to withdraw from it our loyalty and our devotion." --Mark Twain. This is almost, but not quite, correct. In fact some people do finally discard the blinders of conditioning and tradition and learn to think for themselves. I did it, so I ought to know. thus what Solomon and Mark Twain have written is a lie, albeit one well bundled in truth. And yet I cannot say that I am 100% free of my Christian past. It continues to haunt me, and to influence my mind. Sometimes I see this, but at other times who knows? I may not. "there are thoughts that will haunt us in spite of ourselves, and to which it is in vain to say, Begone, and let me be merry." --Sir Walter Scott. And yet: "There is no journey upon this earth that a man may not make if he sets his heart to it." --H. Rider Haggard. The awesome and bewildering power of conditioning and tradition are evident everywhere around us in full glory at all times. The Roman Catholic Church has just released thousands of pages of scandal (June 5, 2002) of the most sordid kind, but no matter what their priests do, good Catholics will remain unshaken and unmoved. They cannot help themselves because they have been systematically trained to be slaves of tradition. All they can do is to try to bear up under their scalding shame. He who rideth the tiger can never dismount. Bill Clinton could not shake loyal Democrats in America by desecrating our Oval Office in Washington. Much less could the Holy Father shake honest Catholics even were he to find a way of raping the Holy Mother of Heaven in the sacred oval Basilica of Rome. There is ample cause for loyalty to tradition. The cultural traditions of our forebears enabled them to avoid death by freezing in the arctic, starvation in the jungles of the Congo, and thirst on the deserts of Arabia. In primitive societies, the details of material culture have been hammered out and refined over millennia, and there is small chance that any individual could stray far from these and survive. To our forebears, then, the secrets of tradition were as powerful and seemingly miraculous as science is today. To stray from tradition alone was to die. Traditionalism is also a powerful tool in our time. Japanese businessmen in Hawaii realize that open competition could drive them to extinction and deprive their children of jobs, so they tend to stick together and hire only Japanese. As a computer programmer, sometimes I have volunteered my energies to improve government services. In such cases, I have found that although I was able to get good cooperation from management, people in the computer support sections of these organizations perceived me as a dangerous threat. They were not interested in maximum efficiency or innovation, but in enjoying comfortable jobs. Management might summon them to consult with me, and they might politely act pleased, but as soon as the opportunity arose, they would quickly conspire to make it impossible for me to continue my efforts. I could not understand this at first, and their duplicity stung me, but now I think I see what is going on. Traditional and ethnic solidarity enable us to enjoy a modicum of job security without pressure. It may be dead boring, but just being able to keep doing the same thing unchallenged for eight hours every day and getting paid good money for it enables people to live comfortable lives, raise families, etc., and for most of us, this is vastly more important than personal integrity. Thus even in modern times, our traditions serve us as a shield against uncertainty. "Men who get on don't question the fundamentals of our social system." --William Raine. By the way, I have only touched the tip of the iceberg of evil in Oahu and Honolulu. When I lived in Makaha, I was nearly killed by a man with a 15.5 pound boulder, but I was saved by the flawless reflexes of a girl named Elis. I had never met this man in my life, and he had no quarrel against me except my white skin, which he cursed loudly in his attack. Although I pressed my case against him, he was neither picked up by the police nor given any sentence at all. Many of my neighbors at the Makaha Surfside Condominium were single-parent mothers living on welfare. Their menfolk would come to stay with them for awhile, then they would throw these men out of their apartments, usually with loud curses and unprintable language, and finally they would let them back in to restart the cycle all over again. My next-door neighbor dealt openly in illegal drugs, and often engaged in bloody fights with his spouse. Until the 1990s, prostitutes and drug dealers plied their wares freely on most street corners downtown and operated out of government housing projects. Promiscuous teen sex and illegal drugs are rampant in all the high schools I know of, and the women tend to be hard as nails. Once I was waiting for the bus by Waianae High School. With me at the bus stop were some school girls. The one of them doing the most of the talking was loudly employing the f- and the sh- word between almost every other word she was saying. "Such language!" I hazarded when I got the chance. "Ay!" she shot back. "You no like hea, then why you listen?" "Please pardon me, Madam," I replied, "but this IS a public bus stop, and I may be able to close my eyes, but I can't close my ears. I have often felt genuine sorrow over the women of Honolulu. After circling the world three times, I think it is probably safe to say that I have never seen finer specimens of female flesh anywhere. Dark, fair, skinny, fat, short, tall, any possible mixture of all the races under the sun--Hawaii has it all. How sad that these finest creatures I have ever known must also be the wretchedest, most miserable, and most vulgar in the world when I should have expected them to be the very best. And yet a moments reflection will tell us that this is precisely what we should expect. No evil ever existed alone, but only as a parasite upon good. Thus wherever there is greater good, there is a correspondingly greater potential for evil. So it is precisely here, in this very approximation of Paradise, that we will find all of the world's most degrading evils. "Some minds move among a group of orthodox and accepted ideas, and always view every new idea as if it were a time bomb set to go off shortly. They not only suspicion new ideas: they actually fear them." --William Raine. "Arguments have no chance against petrified training; they wear it as little as the waves wear a cliff." --Mark Twain. People bound by a common tradition present an impenetrable wall of solidarity against men of reason. People who love truth cannot understand this, because they expect others to agree with them and support them when they are right, whereas people living in the brotherhood of tradition see those who expect others to support them just because they are right as insane. So there is no fellowship between light and darkness, and the children of light will immediately clash with the children of darkness at every encounter, nor can these two types mix any more than can oil and water. The best we can hope for is some kind of uneasy accomodation. At first the children of darkness were in the ascendancy. The children of light hid themselves in caves, learned to pretend, or got fed to lions. But over the millennia, the children of light have increased and become strong, and this is why the world now prepares for battle. America, with all its evils, has become the stronghold, not of Christianity, but of freedom and truth, and therefore also the Great Satan who must be destroyed. Uncircumcised Arab women in America dare to flaunt the sacred veil, to think for themselves, and to sleep with white men, and for such sacrilege we must now be destroyed. Arab women have no right to do these things because they are, and must remain, the sole property of Allah and Islam. All libraries of wisdom have always been rife with lies. We quarrel less and cooperate better when we believe the same lies. Religion helps us live close together in large numbers by supplying us with artificially constructed common libraries of lies. This may be why the origins of all our modern religions can be traced back to the first millennium BC, when populous nation states were emerging. As our children grow up, we fill their heads with the common lies of our particular superstition, and when they grow up, they will be able to cooperate with their fellows better for sharing these lies in common. These traditions provide warm, fuzzy feelings of brotherhood, and help shield us from the poverty and misery that await us outside. But lies hold us back, and keep us from progress, so I will say the following: TRAIN UP A CHILD TO THINK CRITICALLY AND ANALYTICALLY FOR HIMSELF, AND HE WILL THINK FOR HIMSELF ALL HIS LIFE, throw down strongholds, and reach for the stars, and there is no way you will ever be able to know from what he will or will not depart, and whither he will go. Only train him early to love truth and hate lies, and take care not to poison his mind with lies of your own. There may not even be any such thing as a species of action that is ALWAYS either right or wrong. Nor is it probable that there is any such thing as a saying or quotation that is ALWAYS right and works every time. This is why it is essential that we should always critically analyze each thought, taking every possible fact into consideration before believing what we hear or coming to decisions. Life is real and dynamic, and far too complex to be safely negotiated using any kind of prescription, and this is why we have been endowed with minds that are capable of thinking for themselves. Confining one's actions to the prescriptions of some religion or tradition is nothing but a glorified act of lobotomy calculated to deprive us of the use of that organ we need most to survive. * The Father of Lies? "The press of the United States? It is a parasitic growth that battens on the capitalist class. Its function is to serve the established by moulding public opinion, and right well it serves it." --Jack London. True 100 years ago, and still true today. Chapter 3. The Dangers of Living Alone. Although there are many people of exceptional intellect in today's world, and although many of these, through mastery of their own minds, have learned to live well enough alone, the basic human design is not well adapted to complete solitude. In fact careful observation will show that most people living alone are suffering from dementia to one degree or another, and that although living alone takes a heavy toll upon the emotions, in most cases this dementia is tied to delusions. It is apparently natural for the human mind to be deceived, either by misinformation gotten from outside or from false conclusions arrived at from within. But in a group, the very first beginnings of any false idea are quickly shot down before they have the opportunity of taking root and getting strong, and the native human psyche relies on this premise for balance. It is true that this process comes with a price, because along with false ideas, good ones will also inevitably get shot down whenever they fail to conform strictly to the ideas of the group. This is why the greatest scientific innovations have generally come out of societies in which people tend to walk alone, and almost no scientific innovation ever comes from societies in which the individual is too firmly bound to his/her group; and this is why the greatest personal happiness can always be found in the poorest societies, where people live lives closely bound up in extended families, be they ever so poor. * Suicide. But as disgusting and troublesome as the milder forms of dementia may be, they usually go no further than being a handicap to the sufferer and an annoyance to his or her acquaintances and friends. Thus, although at any given moment up to 25% of the US population may be suffering from some kind of dementia, the nation keeps plodding along with its usual small daily ration of murders, suicides, and rapes. Yet in most "developed" nations, this daily ration of suicides is unacceptably high. So why do people commit suicide? There are many reasons, of course, some of which make perfect sense. Many people simply have no other means of escape from great sufferings caused by physical trauma, disease, or old age.Others suffer under an excessive burden of bad memories which cause them intense psychological pain. They have no great goals to live for, and they would rather be dead. This has been a basic human right since the beginning of time, yet our all-wise leaders have seen fit to lock up Dr. Kavorkian and throw away the key. It apparently pains them that old folks can actually take charge of their lives and work out real decisions while they themselves can but wallow. But many people have unwittingly set themselves up for suicide in the following manner: Person A intensely loves Person B to the exclusion of all others. They live happily together, and because both are totally satisfied by one another, they keep to themselves and seek no other friends. At last, Person B grows weary of Person A and betrays Person A by leaving. Person A becomes convinced that life can have no further meaning without person B, and there is no one around to convince Person A otherwise, so Person A puts an end to it all by committing suicide. What has happened? Person A has believed a fatal lie, and being cut off from close contact with others, the natural system of checks and balances has failed. Person A has died as a result of believing a seemingly innocent falsehood, namely: I simply can't live without him/her. Thus even the most trivial falsehood can be deadly to individuals who suddenly find themselves living alone--especially those who have never had to live alone before, and are unfamiliar with the potential deceptions of solitude and their effects upon the human psyche. * Delusions about Invention. Suicidal delusions can kill. Other delusions create cranks who live alone and imagine that they have made or else are on the verge of making great discoveries. Ideas spring up spontaneously during normal mental processes, but when these are not in keeping with reality, there is no one around to shoot them down. Every healthy mind should have its share of fantasies, but not all minds are strong enough to recognize the ones that are out of keeping with reality on their own. Stronger minds may consciously adhere to something like the rigorous steps of the scientific method, but weaker or less disciplined minds are often quickly swept away. I once knew a man in Honolulu who believed himself to be a great inventor and told everyone so. This delusion gave him a wonderful sexual advantage, because there are many unattached women in Honolulu who would like to be the lady of a great inventor, although they themselves are unable to discern whether a man who seems gentlemanly and kind and talks intelligently might really be a great inventor or not. I wasn't quite sure just what he might or might not have done. When I met him one day, he had a broken wrist. He said that he had been working on an anti-gravity machine which had gotten away from him. At last he invited me to his apartment, where he showed me another most amazing machine, carefully and neatly crafted from a host of mechanical parts. It was a perpetual-motion machine, he said, and he spent several minutes explaining its various complicated features to me. His command of English and his entire manner had been so convincing that it was not till then, and only then, that I could tell he was a crank. His fancy machine really didn't work, and the things he was saying were quite wide of the mark. * Religious Delusions. Another kind of falsehood that prays upon the minds of those who live alone is the deception of religion. Here the fantasies are not mechanical, but social, moral, and mystical. A somewhat differently oriented mind is working, probably alone in some desert wilderness or under some great tree. Most religious cranks get scoffed at and ignored, but every once in a great while one of them is popularly believed, usually with dire consequences for all mankind. Of course I know that it is impolitic to speak out clearly of these things. Even in our comparatively enlightened modern times, and to our everlasting shame, hardly anyone will ever dare. But weren't the founders of all the world's "great" religions, at one time or another, people who cut themselves off from the checks and balances of other human minds for long periods to be completely alone? Wasn't the founder of Taoism a loner? Didn't the Buddha starve himself in the Himalayas many months or even years, and didn't he sit alone for forty days and nights under the Bodhi tree, where at last he received his "enlightenment?" And as soon as John had baptized Jesus, didn't Jesus go up into the wilderness for forty days and nights to be "tempted of the Devil" all alone? The problem with this class of delusions is that, unlike the mechanical variety, they can never be tested, and hence can never be debunked or disproved, so that once they become established in the minds of men, they can never be uprooted for all time. And what makes religious delusions doubly dangerous is that, provided those who first experience them are only ordinary men, then it naturally follows that, given the right set of conditions, the exact and selfsame delusions can be experienced by nearly any other ordinary man. This is what gives religion its mystical dimension, and its profound sensations of brotherhood in the mystery and in the faith. This seemingly magical ability to experience some particular delusion, which generally happens when some special set of physical and psychological conditions have been met, is so convincing to the simple that they often become willing to suffer any torment or perform any act, no matter how inhuman, for the sake of the religion with which they associate the delusion. Thus even suicide and wanton murder are as nothing to the fanatical followers of Bin Laden, because they have somehow been "enlightened." "Do not speak ill of the religion of the land, or make a mock of it by your way of life, lest you should learn how cruel men can be when they think that it is pleasing to their gods." --H. Rider Haggard. Once again I must apologize for speaking out against religion. Personally, I have nothing against any religion except Islam, which has caused the destruction of my ancient and beloved Moluccan homeland, driven my childhood playmates from their homes, burned their peaceful villages, and subjected their innocent countrymen to death and unspeakable torments. All ideologies become dangerous the moment people are willing to kill for them. Once upon a time the thought of Communism struck terror to our hearts, but I suspect that poor Communism, which must have been without any deep mystical experience beyond the brotherhood of common hatred, will not be able to hold a candle to violent Islam in times to come. And yet I find Islam both interesting and esthetically pleasing. It is a most marvelous artifact, art form, belief system, moral framework, etc., but I fail to see how it has anything to do with God. And dear Christianity would frighten us out of our wits over sexual immorality on the one hand while telling us that it was the selfsame Christian God, and no other, who blessed mankind with some of the largest penises in all the animal kingdom and specially designed our females to play with them and be hot and sexually receptive all month long from about the tender age of six to ninety-one. Now I am 60, and it has been a long, hard struggle to shake all of the old bugaboos from my mind, and I am not so sure that I have really succeeded, even as I write. How is it that we, as human beings, are indeed so frail, just as all religions tell us, that having in us these incredible thinking machines, the finest in the known universe, which we call "minds," we never use them? What if we could just see all religions for what they really are, and perhaps enjoy their innocent deceptions the way we might enjoy a movie instead of letting them control our very lives? I would not have spoken out against religion, but religion is a deadly falsehood that needs to be exposed. Indeed, I would have been totally hypocritical and irresponsible to have written this book about the faces of evil without mentioning these facts. By keeping silent, I should have contributed to the general conspiracy that is now in the process of ruining our planet, ruining our futures, and ruining our lives. Shame on those who keep on being silent when they know well the truth concerning what is going on. This is a conspiracy of falsehood that endangers the whole world. Do we really want our children to become idiots like ourselves, or do we want them to understand what is happening, deal with it, and move on? Chapter 4. The Myriad forms of Sophistry that Stultify Our Personal Lives. * Delusions of Victimization, or The Devil Made Me Do It. "Those who represent themselves as born to ill luck can usually trace the ill luck to errors or shortcomings of their own." --HORATIO ALGER, JR. Another kind of falsehood that plagues the human mind is the idea that everything that happens to us and everything we do is caused by things and persons other than ourselves. It is certain that environment plays the critical role in our development, but it is also certain that we will never improve ourselves unless we take charge of our own lives. The actions of people who wallow in self pity and self excuse lack something known as "consequence," and have no power to improve or change their lives, whereas people of consequence, no matter how miserable, can think and act and change the world. I fail to understand why Christians must be told this. Didn't Jesus say that even with an infinitesimal amount of faith, such as that which might be compared with a grain of mustard seed, men could remove mountains? Yet we continue to find ourselves forever faced with Christian weaklings who barely have faith enough to get out of bed in the morning, wash their faces, and comb their own hair. "The fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves that we are underlings." --Cassius. * Emperor Sung's 100% Natural Serpent Oil from Beijing. Another kind of falsehood and deception that causes people misery and sucks all the money from their pockets is snake oil. And, mind you, it is of critical importance that this snake oil must be NATURAL. Have you ever heard of any snake oil that WASN'T natural? Never mind. The snake oil WE use must be NATURAL, and that's that. The wise and gentle Chinese believe firmly in the Ying and the Yang, and would drive the black bear and the seahorse to extinction just to live another day in fair Beijing. Yet do Chinese live one whit better or longer for all their deep-breathing exercises and praying-mantis-dropping tea? No, but probably much less. How grievous it is for us who have lived long in the Orient and become intimately familiar with many real Chinese, their illnesses and their multitudinous and enthralling superstitions to become the captive audiences of our New-Age friends who would expound to us the finer points of accupuncture, energy, ying, yang, and the Ai Jing! We dare not open our mouths because of course we know nothing of all these wonders, so we must just content ourselves to smile. "Anybody who promises you health by buying a certain product is a quack." --Dr. Erny Portner of Honolulu. Why are so many people obsessed with the word, NATURAL, these days? NATURAL food, NATURAL remedies, and NATURAL everything else? I will tell you. It is simply because they are cowards who are afraid to grow old and die. They know that Western medicine cannot keep them from dying or keep them young, so they allow their idle minds to wander to the east. Could it not be that somewhere out there, far away and unbeknownst to modern science there might really exist some wondrous NATURAL cure or knowledge that will keep their useless natural selves alive? Surely, and people ultimately believe what they want to be true, whether it be reasonable or not. I am 60, and in much better shape than most people my age, and I thrive upon natural MacDonald's hamburgers and Hershey's chocolate bars. And I say that people long to be deceived because they have no idea of the sinister power behind falsehood and self-deception, which may yet gobble up our precious planet. * The Amazing Things That Can Be Done Through The Power of Our Minds! "Impatient of evil, men seek to annihilate it by denying its existence or by loudly chanting that good thoughts will destroy it. These are typical impatient solutions in the sphere of religion." --Abraham Myerson. Can we really change anything by thinking about it or by forcing ourselves to believe things we know are not so? Every Christian ought to know the answer to this one. "Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?" Jesus asked them (Matthew 6:27). And yet... I once met a New-Age lady in Honolulu who was, frankly, quite well endowed on the physical plane, and had a most charming voice. She was of Filipino origin, but American born, well-spoken with perfect English pronunciation, and apparently quite intelligent. I was single at the time, and as soon as I met her, I knew that there was some sort of physical attraction between her and myself, although I failed somewhat in my attempts to secure a true meeting of our minds--a problem that was further acerbated by my discovery that she was also endowed with a live-in Chinese sex partner. And I confess to a feeling of great loss as she began to expound her spiritual beliefs to me one day at a bus stop. Yet she remained undaunted by my doubts, and wished to open up a business with me. One day, while we were discussing these plans on the telephone, she explained to me the principle of visualization. She said that what we must do was simply to visualize all of the things we wanted, and they would be so. So she went on to tell me of the office we would have in Manoa, with its desks and chairs. But this cute little picture made me love her, and the unfortunate visualization that immediately sprang into my poor, troubled head was one of her on our office floor under me! And all this time, I kept wondering about her relationship with the Chinese. In the end, she lost faith in the whole thing, and left me to find my own way home from some place near Aiea, and it was clear that her trick of visualizing things didn't work. But isn't this kind of self-deception quite harmless? Indeed no. Building up such a structure of falsehood in the mind takes energy that could be put to good use. Then, putting one's faith in empty visualizations opens oneself up wide to needless disappointment, emotional distress, and confusion. And finally, it hurts others, just as this lady ended up hurting me. But Christians should know all of this. After all, didn't Jesus say that foolish men build houses upon sand? That's all this visualization business can ever really get us, so that when we put forth our hands for the silver palaces, we find that all we have gotten is sand. It is sad that Christianity itself really offers nothing better when all is finally said and done. Falsehood is dangerous. It thwarts human growth and destroys people's lives. * Miracles and Supernatural Healing. The votaries of all sorts of religions bear false witness to miracles and healings. When I was a boy, my Christian parents assured me that they had seen many such things, all of them absolutely true, and I believed them. One of my first physical problems was caused by my teeth, which they told me I should brush but then never made sure I did so. By the time I was 14, I was a devout born-again Christian myself, and my front uppers were rotting out, which rather cramped the sweet style of my smile. But never mind. God would heal them, and the excruciating pain of tooth decay gave me some idea of how much I would have to be compensated, and how wonderful my life would be in Heaven. I grew up with a minimum number of dental visits. Deep down in my heart I hated the institution of dentistry, and went into a state of denial. When I was working for Boeing, sometimes I had to visit that old dentist in Seattle, because if I stuck to my faith too strongly, and couldn't show up for work, I would almost certainly get fired. Whenever I entered the dentist's clinic, my emotions would be all aboil, and to top it all off, he had this friendly young female assistant who would deliberately push her lower belly up hard against my shoulder through the most excruciating moments so as to shame me into not screaming and provide physical comfort to me in my pain. One time she talked to me when the dentist was out of the room, and her words ran swiftly to matters of sex. So I was a missionary's son? Well, she had once known the son of a preacher, and he had been famous (or maybe infamous) for his sexual doings. Unfortunately, I was also in denial about God's power over masturbation, and, needless to say, I would then have to go home and masturbate over the memory of her warm, lower belly for days. It is impossible to say now just how much good, young semen this wasted. And when I got into adult life, and became a missionary in Buru, it was ever malaria in the jungle, of which I might well have died without chloroquin. But my missionary parents had taught me well, and even of this defeat to malaria I was still in denial, so I prayed and popped chloroquin pills in the jungle. Then at last it was blindness--Retinitis pigmentosa, for which there is no known cure--but still I kept on hanging in. My physical blindness was terrible enough, but my spiritual blindness was worse. I kept reading Job over as long as I could still see, and even as I write this, I can hear the words, "Though Thou slay me, yet will I trust Thee," echoing through the corridors of my mind. But I was decidedly lucky, for I have read of others more heroic than myself who were arrested for believing and trusting in God, and not taking their dying children to the hospital. "Hiding one's head (and brains) in a desert of optimism merely perpetuates evil, even though one sufferer here and there is deluded into happiness." --Abraham Myerson. So can these seemingly innocent falsehoods about Jesus healing the sick really be evil or dangerous? Definitely, because they can kill you, maim you, and otherwise destroy your mind, your future, and your life. And much as I would like to, I cannot spare Christianity in this thing, because it is patently treacherous and quite false and dangerous to life and limb. And along with Christianity, of course, must go Hinduism, Buddhism, African shamanism, and all brands of Eastern meditation. All of them are equally dangerous, and make an ass and a dupe of their luckiest users, and cold dead men of the rest. People who hold religious or other superstitions about health can destroy their own lives through neglect of personal medical care, nutrition, and basic hygiene. * Sexual Taboos. What is marriage, and can the creator of the universe really be watching us all the time to see what we will do next with our genitalia? The answer to this question would seem to be obvious to suckling babes, and yet the whole world is full of people who live in something like terror over sexual taboos. How many times have I endured questions like, "Do you masturbate?" "Is masturbation a sin?" etc., and how many times have I cringed to hear such things discussed openly before men, women, and even children? Wouldn't it be better for people to ask, "If I do this or that, will it hurt anyone?" because if people would only ask this, many terrible things could be avoided. So we have been lied to about sexual taboos, and these lies have hurt us. I cannot count all the times that lovely women have let me know in some way or other that they would be willing to give all to me, and yet I have had to turn them down, not because they had husbands or lovers, but because of my Christian sexual taboos. How sad to have trashed such splendid opportunities for some foolish sexual taboo that a moment's unbiased reflection must show to have nothing whatever to do with any creator or God! How sad not to have used the splendid members of my body to fulfill the purposes for which they were obviously designed and created while they were still perfect and young! Looking back now, I cannot help seeing these things as almost a crime against my own being and life, not to mention the many disappointments I have given to good women. These horrible, stultifying things sprang from the falsehood of sexual taboos, and they have stolen much from the enjoyment and pleasure of my life and the lives of others which were our common heritage and birthright. Are sexual taboos a falsehood? Of course they are, and they can hurt people very much. * Marriage. But the most rediculous of all things related to sexual taboos must be the American institution of marriage. In the first place, it has no meaning whatsoever, since American law provides perfect freedom for sexual activity of any kind among consenting adults. Then, any American marriage contract can be freely broken at any time without fear of the law. And beyond this, hardly anyone in their right mind could take such vows seriously, since most couples have already flouted the whole idea of marriage already by indulging in premarital sex. Meantime the American divorce rate is creeping ever upwards towards 100%. And finally, the participants have sullied the sacred bond of their love by paying for their marriage liscence, the reverend, the church, and many other things with dollars, and can expect to get ripped off royally by the lawyers when the bubble finally bursts. Since the whole institution of marriage is so thoroughly bound up in falsehood, I think anyone who gets married in America should be ashamed of themselves for being a conformist hypocrit and a complete fool! Is marriage then evil? Of course it is, because the whole thing is a lie. Once people are married, they begin to get the false idea that they own one another, take each other for granted, lose respect for each other, and finally fall out of love. It would be much better for people to really love and respect one another without taking vows they know they will break, show honor and stability toward one another, and do what is right by their children instead of using them as living weapons with which to hurt one another. * The Great Horror of Nakedness and the Corresponding Obsession with Clothes. As I may have written already, I was brought up as the son of American missionary parents in Indonesia, and later became a missionary myself. Perhaps this will help to account for some of my strange insights and views. Among other things, my Southeast Asian experience has made me very skeptical and critical of the American obsession with clothes. Having grown up in a land where the sight of a naked woman in the stream was quite commonplace, and where many children wore pretty much nothing until they were twelve, sometimes it is hard for me to maintain a straight face when I hear people talk. One of the difficult lessons I had to learn about Americans was that many of them perceive nakedness as some kind of sin. At first this whole idea was incomprehensible to me, having never heard anything like it where I grew up, and never read anything of it in the Bible. As a teenager, I was also surprised to find that some Americans even thought "mixed bathing," in which male and female human beings actually went swimming in the same water, a sin. After I grew up and began to bathe my own children, I would strip them all naked at once, throw all of them into the shower together, and let them splash on, and this continued until they were big enough to take their own baths when they got to be six or seven years old. But I learned that to many other Americans, such an outrage would be close to the ultimate horror. Well, since my children were all used to seeing each other naked, they had little enough interest in the naked human form, and never a sexual hangup of any kind that I could ever find. But one of my friends was VERY careful never to allow his boy children to see his girl child, and vice versa, and I cannot say the same for him. In fact I noticed that his children evinced a great and precocious interest in sex which virtually exploded into life when I absent-mindedly made some remark. So is nakedness sin? Of course it is not, and here we have another great and very American lie which drags in a whole litany of sexual perversion. In fact, I am convinced that any unnatural obsession about covering up the female crotch can become an inexhaustible source of sexual perversion, just as can any obsession that results in putting it up for public display. Human sexuality is tricky, and those who get it wrong tend to end up in mental asylums. "beauty, dependent as it is to a certain extent upon the imagination, is never so beautiful as when it is half hid." --H. Rider Haggard. . . . "She who hides her beauty often seems the loveliest. . . . "What man is there that a veiled woman does not interest? Indeed, does not half the interest of woman lie in the fact that her nature is veiled from man, in short a mystery which he is always seeking to solve at his peril, and I might add, never succeeds in solving?" --H. Rider Haggard. * Exhibitionism on Public Beaches, or Collecting Flies. "Let us honor the wifehood of our native land. It is the fountain of all truth and righteousness, and if the fountain should become impure, all is lost. . . . "When a woman falls she generally descends to the lowest plane." --John N. Reynolds. Let us talk about American women who find it necessary to lie about beaches in the sun in scant bikinis. Can it be possible that such beings have healthy human minds? Hardly, as any halfwit might readily see. Yet their thinking has become so twisted by the culture from which they spring that it may be impossible for them to understand this or even think much about it at all. They are not apt to see the subtle difference between wearing a bathing suit to go swimming and stripping down as far as possible in order to cause erections and arouse male passion, and heaven help those who dare mention this distinction! Now let us suppose that the lady is lying supine and spread eagled in the sun. About her hips and vulva is some kind of bandage so small that pubic hairs can be seen everywhere, and the bandage has assumed a little cleft, sinking in some distance between her labia majora. And due to the lack of space in this book, I will not even mention the bandage that somehow covers her nipples. Suppose I or someone else were to walk by and say, "Excuse me, madame, but you have failed to completely cover all of your pubic hairs. Well, in America it is well known that men have been taken to task in courts of law for talking about pubic hairs, and instead of doing something to cover these exposed bristles, she would almost certainly look daggers at me to show that she perfectly understood my intentions, and considered it a great insult that some stray dog like myself should dare imagine grappling with HER. The last thing she would think of is shame. But if these women are only interested in collecting flies, then why bother with bandages or bikinis? Why not just strip down completely and show us their glorious all? Is not honest nakedness the stickier fly paper? Aha! but the answer to this is a long one, and frought with sexual perversion at every turn, for not only is the lady perverted, but so are the police and the laws of the land. In short, for the difference of a couple of bandages, she would be arrested for indecent exposure, and fined. In fact there is deep-seated sexual perversion in America, and it has to do with the American idea of nakedness and clothedness, and the warping of minds that results from always keeping the pubic region unnaturally covered under threat of the police and the law. These things are obsession! Why do I say this? I know it because I have lived in societies where the bare female breast and a skirt from the waist to the knees was standard attire. At first I was shocked, but it took only a few days to get so that I barely even noticed at all. It is ever the things that people try to cover up and hide that become their obsessions and cause unnatural warpings and twistings of their minds. So I say that the difference between a real naked woman and one pretending to be clothed by a bikini is a falsehood, and by now you know that I perceive all falsehood as evil. But please tell me, you psychologists and psychiatrists out there, aren't these poor half-naked women being burned by the sun on our beaches really there because of some desparately hidden and overpowering desire? Just imagine what our myriad female progenitors might have gotten in our ancient forests for "accidentally" raising their drab skins and furs. For those of you who are male, what images flash through your minds at the sight of pale buttocks and thighs? Might it not be true that there lies buried deep in the breast of every healthy woman some primordial and terrible need to be held immobile and probed hard by strong and strange men? For an instant please dump your conditioning and see if this be not so. Are not stolen waters sweet? Didn't our ancient mothers need fast encounters with strong strangers from time to time in order to ensure that I would finally be me and you would be you? If marriage had ever really succeeded, could our race now be what it is? And if these things be true, then instead of allowing our pristine beaches to become steaming laboratories of sexual passion where frustrated and lewd men gather to drool while our poor, confused women strive to passify their suppressed desires without knowing how or why, might it not be wiser to loosen up somewhat on the laws against sexual harrassment, so that instead of being treated as some monumental crime, a solid male slap upon some strange but shaply female buttock might only bring laughs? Mightn't some other set of proprietary rules allowing for a little more rough physical contact between men and women provide a kind of safety valve capable of letting off enough steam to avoid gross sexual perversion without causing real harm? I think the institutionalized exhibitionism on our beaches and streets deserves further study. These naked women on our beaches are there for one reason, and that is to attract weak men like whores, and this is clearly a sickness and an evil, and we need to own up to it and deal with it and move on. Also, dressing and acting in ways specifically designed to arouse an erection in strangers with no intention of delivering the goods sends a lying message, and no lie is without evil results. In nations with laws like the ones we have, there is no real reason for woman to wear anything at all, since the very clothes they put on are more suggestive than nudity itself. Women would quickly start dressing more honestly were our draconian rape laws relaxed. I think we should decide what we want once and for all, and if it is nudity, which it seems to be, then we should allow women to go naked wherever they wish at all times. In fact, for them nudity should be a basic human right, just like freedom of expression and freedom of speech. But I think men should be required to wear something over their penises, be this nothing more than a penis sheath or long gourd, because I simply cannot see a society in which naked men are allowed to wander about "accidently" touching bare female skin with these organs. What I am describing is not without precedent. It is pretty much the system that the wrong-headed Republic of Indonesia has been trying to stamp out in the highlands of West Papua for about two generations. Personally, I think it makes eminent sense, especially for climates like that of Hawaii. * Can the human sex drive be weakened by avoidance? Apparently not, but avoidance can result in perversion. Men who try to become pure celibates end up molesting children. Also, it appears that the more one tries to avoid thinking of sex, the more tantalizing it becomes. Christian men who attempt to be sexually pure are kept tirelessly undressing women in their minds or imagining how it might be to probe their warm, wet vaginas under their skirts, etc., all the while chattering obsessively about scripture and the evils of committing adultery in one's heart, as if denial might yet somehow work where all else had failed. Men who fear "jail bait" use their minds to undress little girls, and the long list goes on. And because of the promise of ultimate Hell fire, I dare say that some men are even now living in abject terror of themselves. But "he who rideth the tiger can never dismount," so unless one has no sex drive, therefore, the only way to solve the sex problem is to find some way of channeling his/her libido harmlessly away. For some, a hug or a kiss or even just a little male/female companionship may do. The idea may just be to take off the keen edge or to draw off enough of the heat to make life at least bearable. Others may find that a little horseplay can help. Perhaps a little shoving, bumping, tickling, slapping, or shouting at each other may do. Still others will find nothing for it but desparate grapplings in the dark. But if one wishes to be happy, then it is best to make sex an object of pleasure instead of an object of suffering, distress, and foolish prayers, because after all we are still ourselves, and whether we make a Paradise or a Hell of our lives will depend finally upon us. The sex drive, of course, is a strong one, else we would have ceased to exist, and all strong drives can go dangerously wrong, with terrible consequences to body and soul. * Mutilation. If you have followed me thus far and fail to see that man is absolutely stupid and unwilling to use his/her mind, then I have certainly failed. Nevertheless I will continue. Besides the mere psychological forms of suffering described above, the human obsession with sex can result in more concrete, permanent, and irreversible damage. In many cultures--perhaps nearly all--some form of physical mutilation or other is practised right down to this day. It may be the piercing of an earlobe, or the tatooing of a moustache upon a woman's upper lip, but whatever else, it almost always involves the enitalia. For example, a girl may be subjected to female circumcision at about the same time as her teeth are filed, so that a quick glance at the teeth can tell one the girl's status vis a vis the all-important GENITAL mutilation. In the US, traditional mutilation is limited to males. It consists of the removal of the foreskin from the penis during infancy, and true to the universal spirit of genital mutilation, it is performed without anesthesia. And in every culture in which it is practised, physical mutilation must be provided with some rationale. So here come the falsehoods and lies. It may be the will of the gods, the proof of manhood or womanhood, the opening of a way out for unborn babies, or anything else. For the American case, I have heard at least two: (1) "If you leave it on, someday it may become infected." I think I rather like this one. So may his FOOT, so why not cut THAT off without anesthesia as well? And then I have been told (2) that it is the will of God, because He commanded it to be done by the children of Israel, which is probably the right and original story. Are any of these old wives' tales true? Of course not. In one place the Bible tells us that God gave the covenant of circumcision to Abraham, but in another place it says that Moses gave it to the Jews because of the fathers, while in reality circumcision had probably been around for thousands of years before Abraham OR Moses. They are lies, and if I have done my duty in this work, by now you will have guessed that no good can ever come from lies because they fight against the very foundations of the universe itself. I think the only spirit or god that ever taught men to mutilate their helpless and terrified offspring must be some brutal instinct buried deep in the genes of all men, else why this weird preference for mutilation without anesthesia in a land where anesthesia is almost universal? I shudder to contemplate such a demon. Can it be that such things are in me? But of course they MUST be, and hence it is imperative that I think ere I do! But I would ask you of those doctors among us who put their hands to these mutilations, abortions, etc. Do they ever think too? Of all the stupid things that men have institutionalized and taught themselves to believe, the various kinds of mutilation must be among the most idiotic, because they destroy the very host of life itself, which is the physical form. How men have despised their own bodies! I sometimes find myself wondering what they will think of the things they have done to themselves and others when they die. Then I have to remind myself that dead men don't think at all, and I smile because once again my dead missionary parents' ideas are at work on my poor, simple mind! What a wicked, cruel trick to cut off the foreskin of an infant without anesthesia under the pretext of carrying out the perfect will of some bloody, murdering Hebrew god! What a dispicable and cowardly thing to cut out the clitoris of a terrified young girl beside some lonely mountain stream! Yet these things give us deep satisfaction, else we would never dream of doing any of them. How terrible are the bugaboos of our minds, and what a very long way we have yet to go upon this evolutionary journey! These organs that have been removed can NEVER be replaced, and they both perform important functions in sexual intercourse, otherwise they would not be there in the first place. Their removal will make it impossible for the victim ever to know the complete range of feelings involved in the sex act as it was originally designed. But we know all of this very well and care less, because we also know that deep within ourselves exists some primordial need that is satisfied by the terror of genital mutilation. The indirect object of the sex act is to produce offspring, but its direct object is to stimulate profound reaction. The rape of a virgin, for example, may give peak satisfaction by producing a frenzy of shock, ecstasy, and fear, whereas consenting sex with an experienced woman may produce nothing more than a little mild pleasure. A more satisfying result might be obtained by first surprising and terrifying the experienced woman with some stabbing or slow torture--hence sadism. The general rule seems to be that the greater the reaction produced, the greater the sexual satisfaction of the party causing the reaction. If this rule be true, then it is easy to understand how a woman might derive a mild jolt of sexual satisfaction by causing an erection in someone who sees her walk by. Unfortunately, this sexual satisfaction will not be shared by the male sufferer, who will not have caused any reaction at all. For him to produce a profound reaction, he would have to run after the cause of his erection and immobilize her in his arms. Then her pulse rate might shoot up, and she might be filled with a mixture of surprise, trepidation, and desire. At this point her male counterpart would find satisfaction enough, but by the laws of our land, stand in peril of being picked up for sexual assault. Sexual perverts derive satisfaction from hiding in the bushes at night and frightening women with hissing sounds, etc., because fright, especially in the sexual connotation, is an appropriate deep reaction. And besides fright, this kind of encounter also seems to stimulate genuine female sexual responses, however unwanted and unbidden. This once happened to the 19-year-old daughter of an American missionary friend in Singapore. What surprised me was that, after coming into the house and telling her story, she expressed feelings of guilt which she was trying to shake off. I could not understand this at the time, but now I think it must be because in such cases there is a genuine sexual interaction that takes place between the pervert in the bushes and the lady on the sidewalk. First he causes a reaction in her, and this gives him satisfaction. But this satisfaction is a deep reaction caused by her, so she finds herself rewarded by a jolt of sexual satisfaction of her own. In this way, even without touching, and much against her own will, she has had a genuine sexual interaction with a pervert in the bushes, and this makes her feel guilty and disgusted with herself. Some couples enjoy sexual intercourse that borders on violence. This is not hard to explain in light of the above. He gets rough, and this gives her sexual satisfaction because this roughness of his is a reaction to her. He feels her pleasure, and gets even rougher, and she goes out of her mind, and so on. She may get hurt, and he may get scratched, but it will all have been so intensely exciting that they will soon be quite willing to try it again, and deep in her heart she may feel proud of the fact that she has the sexual power to make a man like HIM do something like THAT! And she may even tell her best friend. I have written the above to establish an understanding of the direct object of sex in order to better understand the ubiquitous phenomenon of genital mutilation. Now imagine the shock, terror, and confused sexual impulses of a young girl being stripped beside some lonely mountain stream for purposes of irreversible genital mutilation. What object could ever bring greater sexual satisfaction? Now hold her cowering in the stream! Now touch her shrinking and trembling genitalia! Now savor her silent horror! Now cut and inflict deep and unbearable pain! Now watch her despair at the permanent and irrevocable results! Now you have gone through the steps, and you understand what they mean. Perhaps you could never do them, because you have been conditioned to feel the pain of others as if it were your own. Her pain might haunt you for the rest of your life. But Sadam Hussein could probably do it without batting an eyelash, and so could an innumerable host of other crazed Arabs and oOriental madmen. I am convinced that in general the torture of the helpless springs from the same vision. The experience of the circumcising surgeon may be but a shadow of this primeval vision, but it is such a shadow, nevertheless, else why is it done sans anesthesia? By what right can one human being justify the perpetration of such a wicked atrocity upon any fellow woman or man--much less a defenseless infant or child? From such horrors all mankind should shudder and slink away, but instead we just take them in stride, for as yet we have never even begun to know the meaning of shame. You may be sorry you have read this, but I am not. Why? To quote William Raine: "Society wants to go along comfortably without being disturbed by anything unpleasant or capable of harrowing the feelings. It wants to hear as little about the distresses of other people as possible." People tell us ignorance is bliss, but bliss for whom? Certainly not for the innocent victims of violence who cry out for our help in this world. Instead I hope I have stung you as Socrates stung the ancient Athenians, not to poison the bearer of bad news, as they did, but to think and to DO before it is everlastingly too late for all of us. So what IS mutilation, and where does it come from? Again, it would seem that any fool might easily answer this question without trouble were he/she only to try to reason it out instead of repeating some memorized formula. If the genitalia are almost always involved somehow or other, and if it is a well-known fact that the cutting of genitalia is associated with sadism, then where else might mutilation come from except from the ancient institutionalization of this disease and perversion of the mind? Anyone involved in any of these things in our time deserves to be covered with shame because such things are simply inexcusable. But if people are willing to perpetrate and suffer the cruelest of physical mutilations in order to conform to the dictates of religion or tradition, then clearly they will do the same or worse to their spirits as well. Is this not why the bright eyes of children become the dull eyes of adults? So beware of convictions, because history says that people can be convinced to do anything the human mind can imagine, and beware of what you are taught, because history says that the things you are taught can kill you. * Sexual Promiscuity. Some people believe that sexual promiscuity is okay. This is a lie that can destroy our lives. People who fall into sexual promiscuity get diseases and make themselves less and less capable of loving and being loved. It is harder to love just one woman or man when one has had many, and it is hard to love anyone we see as a slut. In fact virginity is evidently deemed so important to our designer and creator that the female body has been specially contrived so as to reveal whether or not a woman is a virgin at a glance (or, for those of us who are blind, a quick probe). In fact, it is almost impossible for many men to love women who have given their virginity to others as well as they can love women who have been punctured by themselves. Just why these things are we do not seem to know, but their existence cannot be denied. * Higher Love. One of the greatest mysteries in our universe is the phenomenon of pure sexual love. Although almost everyone has experienced some kind of sexual affection, it is evidently true that many people have never experienced pure sexual love--probably because of some deficiency in their social conditioning. But for those fortunate persons who HAVE, this pure and true love is probably the most precious thing they have ever known. Sexual promiscuity can spoil it, or even keep it from ever happening at all. Another thing that seems to destroy it is any shadow of dishonesty or deception. This love can only be experienced by those who can know and believe their own feelings. In societies where people do not trust their own feelings or take them seriously, this love is devalued, put down, and, if possible, completely destroyed. One of the most interesting tales I have ever heard about love was told to me by a man and wife I met in Indonesia, where human rights have been so frightfully abused, and romantic love has been so despised. This man and woman had never set eyes upon each other until they saw one another in a crowded bazaar. Both were young. He was handsome, and she was beautiful. He immediately asked her to marry him, and she agreed without further adoo. To some, this tale may seem to simple for true love to have been involved. And yet I believe it must be people like these, who believe in themselves and take their own feelings seriously enough to trust them in making decisions, that experience the highest, most noble forms of sexual love. These are people of consequence, whose thoughts and actions have meaning. * A Nation of Whores. "women folk are hard to teach; they never learn nothing till it's too late, they don't, and then when they've been and done it they're sorry, but what's the good o' that?" --Rider Haggard. I cannot count the number of times I have been taken to high levels of intimacy by American girls who were interested in nothing but playing some game with my feelings, and I see that it is extremely difficult for any higher level of sexual love to exist in a society such as our own, where mothers push their daughters to begin dating at 14 or 15, and insist that they do not date the same boys (go steady) until they have been out with many, pawed by many, kissed by many, and other things by many. What could be any greater crime against love than this thing, and what could be more shameful and dishonest? But parents who have never known higher love cannot see this, and don't know what to do with their children, so they read books with these disgusting formulas and attempt to implement them. The tragedy is that the highest love cannot exist except in the presence of the highest standards of honor, faithfulness, and personal integrity. By encouraging our children in any other direction we are robbing our daughters of the capacity to love and setting them up to be whores. It is true that all whores begin life as pure virgins. It is not true that all good housewives and mothers begin life as whores. In fact, we might as well chop their feet off and tell them to walk. So I perceive the current American idea of love as nothing but confusion and lies, whose tragic results can be seen everywhere without end. Was any lie ever good, or "healthy," as I hear Anericans refer to the lovemaking attempts of their poor, confused children? Who has bewitched us? How can we be so stupid? No one could have done this to us but ourselves. Anyone else would have perished by nuclear holocaust. "What man is there who does not prize that gift most rare and beautiful, that one perfect thing which no gold can buy--a woman's unfeigned love? . . . "I dare say it is a form of selfishness, but what every man desires is something that cares for him /alone/, which is just why we are so fond of dogs. . . . "The woman who as we believed adored us solely has probably in the course of her career adored others, or at any rate other things." --H. Rider Haggard. * Human Sacrifice, Sin, and Hell. Can the master and creator of the universe, if there be such a being, really have any interest in what you or I do? Of course not. To such a being, you or I would be less than a couple of cockroaches. But here come the lies: God cares very much about YOU. You may never have heard him nor seen him, and he may never have answered a single prayer of yours in your life, but just believe me right now that he loves you and cares deeply about you, and give your heart to Jesus, the Buddha, or the fat Brahma Bull, and my brother, my sister, YOU will be SAVED! You are a sinner, and there is no forgiveness for sins without the shedding of blood. Yes, God is almighty, and God created the universe, but he can't forgive sins without blood. God LOVES blood, nay, IS OBSESSED like a SADIST with blood, and your sins are SO TERRIBLE that this blood cannot be the blood of a chicken or goat. It must be the blood of a man, and a far better man than YOU are. Nay, but it must be the almighty perfect son of Almighty God himself, or YOU DIE, and if you don't believe all of this right now and swallow it all down in one gulp, my friend, YOU are going to HELL, where you will burn for ever and ever without respite or end. And do you know what? God is doing all of this to/for you because HE LOVES YOU! Pretty sick when you tell it all straight like it is, isn't it? But of course we have heard it all so many times over that we aren't even shocked or surprised, and we are SO stupid and SUCH gulls that we almost believe it all over again! This is man--that incredible being with the incredible mind that he knows all about how to think with for his sex games, but with which he stolidly refuses to think about much of anything else whenever he has some ready answer, prescription, or formula! Dear me, even great scientists believe everything I have written above lock, stock, and barrel, so why not you or me? Then is man really a sinner, is there really an original sin, and does man need a savior? Think it out for yourself this time instead of snapping back with Aunty Suzy's terrifying Sunday School lesson, and you just may get it right. Can these seemingly innocent things hurt you, and are they really lies? Of course they can and of course they are. They can take over your weak mind, fill you with terror, destabilize your thinking, and make you suffer and belch up money to the church all the rest of your life. I think all lies are deadly, and these things are rank lies. So all our lives we have been assiduously trained to see good as evil and evil as good. Is it any wonder then if we fail to reach our potential when we have been stuffed with such lies? The miracle is that not all of us are perfect monsters! As I hope I have shown, seemingly innocent lies are quite deadly, and have lethal power to stunt our physical and psychological development, and reduce us to dupes if not mental retards. * The Spirit Realm and the Fear of the Dark. So is there a spiritual world that exists alongside this material realm? I used to think so, but now I do not. And yet I can never quite feel 100% sure. Sometimes it would seem that there is, but then alternative explanations are found for experiences and phenomena, and it would seem to be the case that there is not. So because I cannot be sure, I will hazard a working hypothesis, and say plainly that the myth of the spiritual universe is just another lie that holds men in bondage and ignorance. And so is the myth of the immortality of the soul, eternal Heaven, eternal Hell, and so on. And in this latter matter I do believe that I be on somewhat firm ground, because I simply cannot see why a superior being such as the intelligent creator of all life should want to keep me alive past my lifetime. Why should He, when my friends cannot even tolerate my presence for more than half an hour or an hour at a time, and that only upon special occasions. If I can manage to bore my peers so much in this world, then certainly I would bore God. To him, I should think, I would probably have somewhat less than the intelligence of a cockroach as compared to me. So why would the master and creator of the universe (if there be such a one) want to keep me alive to bore Him for thousands of years? This would certainly seem foolish, since I am much more useful as the evolutionary experiment that I am, just like some certain cockroach might be interesting to me for a generation or so if I were trying to improve cockroach breeds. And why, oh why, should a master and creator of universes wish to keep me forever in HELL? Are the creators of universes also blessed with faulty DNA that leaves such monstrosities as sadism hidden deep in our genes? Shame on us for even thinking, much less believing, such things! How basely have we been duped by those who manipulate our abject and miserable minds! First the boogiman, now Hell! What next? Pergatorium, of course, and Limbo! Indulgences, Anyone? I tremble! And almost as bad as superstitions about an eternal hereafter, and eternal bliss or the unending vengeance of some becrazed God Hell-bent upon punishing us for some kind of crime that makes less than no sense, perhaps even, for example, some "original sin" that we know nothing whatever about at all, are the unending beliefs in ghosts, magic, and talismans. How these things have stunted our minds, and served to focus them on red herrings that get us nowhere. How they have paralyzed us with fears of the dark, fears of days and hours, fears of petty dieties and of ghosts. All these things are but lies, which serve only to keep us from thinking and acting like men. Where DO these things come from to pester our lives? Doubtless from foolish women who have been too lazy to discipline their children and keep them indoors in the night. "Did you see the goblin out there in the dark, just waiting to gobble you up?" Some children may be strong enough later to get such things out of their heads, but most won't, so before long all the woods will be peopled with goblins, hobgoblins, etc. "Impossible," you might say, but just read back through the preceding pages to see how doting we are, and how unwilling to use our own minds to make any least determination on our own when we have ready answers to recite from our dear parents mouths and from THEIRS before THEM! "This is how African superstitions are kept alive. Sooner or later some saying of the sort fulfils itself and then the instance is remembered and handed down for generations, while other instances in which nothing out of the common has occurred are not heeded, or are forgotten. --H. Rider Haggard. All lies are dangerous, as I have just said, and the great danger of these lies is this: Whenever a man believes in the supernatural, and especially the disorganized supernatural of hobgoblins, it is always much easier to attribute any unexplained phenomena to these spirits than to trouble with bothersome investigations. So the mind filled with spirits and spiritual explanations becomes useless as an observer or a person of science. Once I brought the Haruku fisherman, Ama Uneputi, to Buru with me. There he built a canoe with the help of some friends, and one afternoon brought in roughly sixty bonito fish in the space of about an hour. Such prowess had been unheard of in Buru before that time, and I had hoped that he might teach some new skills to the men of Air Buaya, which was a Moslem village nearby. But when I suggested this to them, they said that of course Ama had done what he did using magic, and therefore it was useless to try to learn any new fishing technique from him. So this stubborn superstition and lie kept them from the beautiful gift of knowledge that Ama had been willing to give them, which might have dramatically improved their own lot. * The Superstition of Reincarnation. Of what use are lives which we do not remember after death has shut the door of each of them? --H. Rider Haggard. The folly of reincarnationism is simply this: We ARE our memories. Erase our memories and we are nothing. Without our memories, we would not even know our own names. It is therefore quite impossible for anyone to have ever been anything he/she cannot remember, because what we cannot remember is not part of us. We cannot even remember enough of our childhood memories to enable us to be the same children we once were, let alone persons from the past of whose memories we can really remember nothing at all. True, the human mind is the greatest of all modelers, and it is therefore possible to model past lives in our imaginations, and then to push these models into our long-term memories so that they actually become part of us. Recall that we ARE our memories, and therefore even artificial memories can become part of us. But such artificial memories are merely yet more deception and falsehood. The reincarnationist first convinces him/herself to believe a lie, and then goes about trying to convince others that his/her lie is the truth. And so we see once more just the same old human process of creating, believing, and broadcasting lies. But can such seemingly innocent lies be dangerous? I fear that many will fault me for saying so, and yet I would be remiss here to fail to point out the inherent danger of ALL lies. Lies enslave. People who agree to believe lies give up something of their priceless intellectual freedom with every additional lie they believe, and the lie of reincarnation is no feeble lie. The defense of reincarnationism is just one more sorry device with which men seek to paralyze and poison their own minds. All such philosophical and religious -isms serve only to prejudice our minds so as to make it impossible for us to see the truth, even when it stands naked before our very eyes. These superstitions rob us of our natural greatness, and make myopic insects of our minds. Those who promote them keep on polishing and shining them as if they were some wonderful forbidden fruit, and presenting them with smooth words that would put Eve's serpent to shame. But as soon as we believe them, we find ourselves excluded from Eden, because our superstitions blind us and keep us from thinking freely, whereas to tHINK abundantly, clearly, and freely is to walk in Paradise with God. * The Fudging of Data. Once when I was in Ambon, a college student brought his lab work to show my friend, Andy. The readings he got did not match the ones in the book, so he was fudging them to make them look "right." How sad to think of the many monumental scientific discoveries that might have been missed had others been of the same mind! Here is another perfect example of the way in which just a few little lies might completely block one's pathway to greatness. * The Yea and the Amen. I was once listening to an evangelist in Santa Anna, California, near Disneyland. I think his name was Kenneth Copeland, and my dear friends wanted him to heal my poor eyes. He got us laughing by mentioning Disneyland, "where," he said, "a certain mouse has a lot of people in a trap," and I suppose this was true, but I am not so sure where HE had US. The main thing was that he got a lot of people saying "amen" to almost everything he said in his tiresome bombast. And then (it had to be), he came to the matter of money for him. "God wants to sanctify your spirit, soul, body, and pocketbook," said the evangelist, and then there were more of the usual amens. By then, I suppose he might have said almost anything and gotten amens. "Give God a dollar, and He'll return you a hundred," he said, meaning Kenneth Copeland instead of God, who can never have needed dollars from the beginning of time. "Amen" and "amen." And then there was the Jonestown mass suicide in Uruguay, and I wanted to kno why, but the media didn't say. Why should they care about the reason when they had the story? But finally one day I happened to be listening when they played the tape recordings that had been gathered about Jim Jones, and I knew the answer for myself. This Jim Jones had a loud and intimidating voice such as one you might hear in a good military commander, and no matter what he said, all his people said, "Amen!" In this way, if the great spiritual leader Jim Jones wanted sex or disciplin or whatever, it was always "amen," until when he wanted suicide it was also "amen," and the grave. And how could a leader like Jim Jones go crazy? Easy. All he had to do was to get himself into that kind of position of power that brooks no feedback save "amen," and it was only a matter of time, because as I have said, there are some disciplined men who can handle loneliness, but most of us go berzerk. So all of Jim Jones' lies went unchecked and AMENed, until finally they bore their result, because all lies, even little ones, can be deadly--especially when clustered in bunches. But this YEA and AMEN are the very tools by which lies are propagated and reinforced, be they religious, political, or whatever. So it is crucial that we understand what is happening in such situations, and never allow ourselves to start down this road. * How TV Can Ruin You. Another lie we are told is that TV can't hurt you. Nothing could be further from the truth. Since we are primarily creatures of eyes and ears, the best and most direct way of getting straight into our minds is through things like TV. It is nonsensical to believe that TV cannot affect our minds, because all TV in America is commercial, which means that it is paid for by people who have irrefutable proof that it CAN. If this were not so, there would be no TV in America, because all of it is commercial. TV is not cheap, and these people are using it on us and paying atrocious prices to do so because they know it works with incredible power. Even just a few seconds of commercial can change your mind, change your loyalties, and change your whole life if only it happens to hit you in just the right way at just the right time, etc. Once upon a time, TV commercials were short and to the point, but now they keep taking up ever more of the program, and one cannot escape them, even when one is already paying dearly for cable. Yet we tolerate them, because besides having this incredible power to control our minds and make us do things, TV is also addictive. It becomes part of our lives, and we can't live without it. But so what if it does? How can any of this hurt us? It can hurt us in many different ways. In the first place, because it is addictive, it can change the way our minds work, chew into our time, and keep us away from physical and mental exercise--especially the reading of books. It can also keep us away from deeper, more meaningful conversations with our friends by always babbling on distractingly in the background. So television addiction can rob us of personal, intellectual, and social development--in other words, it can make us retarded, and keep us from developing our full physical and spiritual potential as human beings. But this is not the end. Allowing ourselves to be pumped with commercial advertising can result in other kinds of addictions that are dangerous to life and limb. As an example, many people become addicted to Coca Cola. This addiction is dangerous because it can block the normal flow of feces from our bowels, and the leeching of container-wall material may affect our bodies in other ways as yet not known. And television-induced addictions of this kind are not cheap. Each one of them can cost us many dollars per year for something we have never needed or for something that could cause us harm. And finally, non-advertising TV content can corrode our moral values and alter our outlook, character, and personality. If just 30 seconds of Coca-Cola commercial can wreak havoc with our bodies and minds, then just imagine what the many hours of content can do to us each day. Idle women sit watching soap operas day after day, and these programs keep getting more and more depraved with every passing year. The results cannot but help be devastating. TV excites our deepest sexual passions without accompanying fulfillment, and this is unnatural, and alters our sexual habits in the real world. Overexposure may cause us to despise love, not take our own sexuality seriously, and many other sinister things. By constantly bombarding our minds with the unnatural, TV can change our whole perception of reality to the point where we start seeingevil everywhere, and lose the confidence we need to interact with other ordinary human beings. For example, long exposure to the homosexual obsession may cause parents to suspect homosexuality in their children when it is not their, and to inflict deep psychological wounds by bringing the sacred honor and integrity of their children into question for nothing. This embitters their children against them, and causes their children to despise them. The constant bombardment with unnatural sex and homosexuality may also have a stimulating effect, and cause people to seek these things or to believe they need these things. In fact, because TV can mold one's mind, it can easily become the cause for different kinds of mild insanity, and for sexual and psychological abnormality. And lastly, TV can destroy your prospects by robbing you of something called "consequence." People who watch TV can get so they never do anything themselves. They watch people sing, but they never sing or whistle themselves, and automatically despise all REAL people who do. They may even forget how to carry a tune. They watch people fight, but they never fight. They watch people climb mountains, but they would be afraid even to climb onto their roofs. They watch people exercise, but never leave their chairs. They watch people kiss, but they never make love. They watch people laugh, but they never smile. They watch people die, but somehow keep on living. They are asked rhetorical questions, and never reply. It is not hard to imagine what happens to a person who lives like this day after day. They become habituated to the idea that they and their actions mean little, and so there is nothing they do that has any consequence--that does anything to alter their lives or their world. But TV could not be the evil that it is without having a correspondingly powerful potential for good. We learn many wonderful things from TV, experience important and meaningful emotions, pick up good things we can immitate, etc. The evil of TV is simply the lie that says it is comparatively harmless and keeps us from seeing all the other, bad things it can do to us at the same time it does good. * The Tyranny of the Mouse. It has been said that Disneyland is a place where a certain mouse has a lot of people in a trap. But it is doubtful if poor old Walt Disney could ever have dreamed of the numbers of people who might be enslaved by yet another kind of mouse. Sound and graphics have tremendous power over our minds, as I have mentioned above. But surprisingly enough, it turns out that the success of the greatest movie and television producers pales in comparison to the success of Bill Gates, because Microsoft has cranked this human addiction to bright screens up to an amazing new level. I will not belabor this point, because the results of this addiction are plain to see everywhere around us. Instead of freeing people from drudgery as it was supposed to do, Microsoft has made the computer a chain that keeps us tied down for hours to our chairs. Processes that were once fully automated now require constant attention to shephard them through to completion. Pop-up windows appear out of nowhere in the middle of our work at every step demanding immediate attention, else we cannot proceed. And we are kept glued to our screens because each one of these steps we complete rewards us with a sense of accomplishment, even though we have not accomplished anything at all for which we have not already paid dearly when we first bought our computer systems. And alongside this sense of accomplishment when we are accomplishing little or nothing is the delusion of learning. People sit for long hours trying to figure out how to do the simplest of things because Windows is supposed to be intuitively obvious, and when they finally succeed, they believed they have really learned something and are on their way to becoming computer experts when they might have learned more by doing a crossword puzzle. This delusion is a sad one, and has become yet another evil that saps the strength and potential of the unwary at great monitary and human cost. * Radio and Rock-n-roll. The price of radios has now fallen below any of our wildest dreams, so people are naturally apt to by radios for their children. What they fail to realize is that in the hands of a child, a radio constitutes a pipeline straight to Hell. If there was really a Satan who could speak to people's minds, would you really want to help him by providing him an extra 24-hour conduit straight into your child's brain? Radio programming was once one of the finest art forms and the best sources of good information in the world--but not since the record producers got ahold of it. Here, once again, we have a situation in which we have a high-quality communications medium at the mercy of the unprincipled dollar. Again, without commercialization, we would have no radio in America--unless National Public Radio might somehow survive. But the plight of radio is worse than that of TV, because the main sponsors of radio are record producers Hell-bent upon selling rubbish products to our children under different phony guises. It is impossible to document the metamorphosis of radio from one of our finest sources of good information and entertainment into the blaring monster that it is today. The reason for this is simple. A lot of it was done using drugs about which people are not free to talk unless they want prison. Record companies provided cocain to disk jokeys for playing their "songs," and pay them in other ways now. Why? Because there exists a well-known psychological principle, and it is this: PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS WANT MORE OF WHAT THEY HEAR MOST. This is the principle that makes Chinese order music from China, Indians order music from India, and Mexicans order music from Mexico. People always want to hear the music they have heard most, and especially the music they heard most in their youth. All this is good, and would have worked out well for the world without greed. But wherever great good is, there also is great potential for evil, so evil people have figured out how best to pervert this great good. They learned that whatever songs were played most on the radio, without much real consideration for quality or taste, those were the songs that sold. And this knowledge was an AMAZING new way to make millions of dollars! Just think! One might make up almost any stupid song, press it onto vynil, and sell MILLIONS of copies! All one had to do was to make sure it got played enough times over the air. So began the great radio conspiracy. Of course this knowledge had to be kept secret, or at least not made perfectly obvious, so various means would have to be devised in order to keep the public in the dark. One would not be able to just go off into some laboratory to do the work. "Rock stars" and "rock groups" would have to be organized who would tour the nation and be famous. So these people latched onto young men like Elvis Presley, made them what they were, and helped them to their deaths. I suppose the deaths must have come as a surprise, so I will not try to hold them responsible for that. But these record companies and promoters are guilty of more sinister crimes, because they have had no respect for us or our youth, and have deceived their ways into the sanctity of our minds. Here are some of their most blatant lies: 1. "Rock-n-roll is the natural, popular music of America." Certainly not. It is the unnatural product of their machinations which has been fed into our minds by conspiratorial deception and careful design. 2. "Rock-n-roll is kids' music, arising spontaneously and naturally from our youth." Nonsense. Most of it is probably written by conspiring old men. Behind every Elvis Presley is some scrofulous old promoter making millions off the game, but although we know this, we are unwilling to see it, because we would rather repeat snippets and slogans than ever to use our minds. 3. "Rock-n-roll is harmless." Surely, and the moon is made of blue cheeze! If just thirty seconds of television commercial can make you run out to buy cokes, just think what hours and hours inside those headphones ought to do! You know the answer: cynicism, sexual obsession and perversion, drug use, vile and wrongheaded ideas about every kind of human relationship--you name it. It's all right there, isn't it--right inside your headphones and your head, screaming at 100 decibles? Incredibly, these people don't seem only to want our money. They also seem to want our own eternal souls! I have heard "singing" about unwed mothers giving birth and murdering their babies in the restroom over the PA system at Pizza Hut. I have heard "singing" about sex and "shit" over taxpayer-funded university FM. I have heard women screeching their orgasms to the world. I have heard all manner of sucking and thumping sounds, and I have heard words about all manner of psychological and sexual perversion. How the record producers must laugh at what suckers they have made of us on their way to the bank! MacDonald's couldn't do better by putting cow turd in their burgers instead of ground beef! For goodness sake, we ARE our memories, and having heard all these rotten things, they remain indellibly stuck in our minds. How can I ever forget all the orgasmic gruntings, moanings, and wailings that have been accidentally pumped into my mind on FM. Must I be afraid even to turn on my radio? These things are forever stuck like parasites in my mind, and hence become part of me. I did not need to hear them and I did not want to hear them, but there they were before I knew it on my radio and straight into my mind. Because of this I am a different, more bitter man, and in the sacred inner sanctum of my mind I am forced to carry the sleezy feelings of pimps and whores. I cannot get rid of these sensations because they are firmly lodged against my own will, and become an unbidden and unwelcome part of my being. And yet I have never once used my headphones for the express purpose of listening to rock-n-roll. I wonder what would have happened to me if I had. No wonder people are so different now from long ago. It is impossible for them to help becoming, at least to a certain degree, what has been pumped into their weak minds by the radio. It is psychologically inevitable that they should and must be the exact way they are. 4. "Rock-n-roll is pleasing." So is the tortuous reading of the Koran--to Moslem ears. They tell us it is good, but it seems to make them want to kill, else I am wrong. Nevertheless, it is the milk upon which they have cut their teeth, if not their tongues, as rock-n-roll, which make us screw, is ours. Or how about loud cymbals accompanied by flutes, which makes us red-haired devils flee but draws Chinese along? If we be but machines, then wind us up, and we will play your song. But if we be truly men, then we will think, and we will feel, and we will know, and we will tell you right from wrong! Chapter 5. Other Kinds of Evil, More Lies, Etc. * Patience. "One meets every day men and women who help injustice and iniquity by their patience. ... "Organized wrong and oppression owe their existence mainly to the habitual patience of the oppressed. "The East, bearing a huge burden of misery and essentially pessimistic, exhorts patience. The West, eager and full of hope, is impatient." --Abraham Myerson. Politicians often tell us to be patient and work hard, because we will surely get our rights as soon as this or that five-year plan has been done. And we are usually willing to buy such rhetoric, because even the trivial experiences of our own lives have taught us that big things require time, religion asks for patience, and those who make demands will be despised. But where human dignity and human rights are concerned, the gospel of patience and deferred fulfillment is a lie that has empowered and enriched the human monsters of the earth. What people really need to do is to get up, get mad, and demand their rights NOW, because as a general rule, people will get whatever they are willing to tolerate. Tolerate a dictator and you will have a dictator. Tolerate another five-year plan and you will have another five-year plan, and so on. This kind of thinking is exactly the same as that of the abused wife. The abused wife keeps suffering beatings because she believes that if only this or that happens, things will get better. And the abusive husband may keep her hopes alive by apologizing, attending counseling sessions, etc. My advice to the abused spouse is to leave immediately. Never allow yourself to get beaten a second time, because in general, once started, abuse always ever gets worse. Forget God and the church and your marriage vows, because if any of these things had any merit, you wouldn't have been beaten in the first place. You are only deceiving yourself, and all deception is dangerous and evil, both to yourself and to others. * Ahimsa. A great deal of confusion has been spread over the world about the subjects of violence and nonviolence. Some of this springs from religious and pseudo-religious teachings, but one of the most important sources for theories of nonviolence has been the methodology, known by the Indian term, AHIMSA, employed by Mahatma Ghandi to combat White supremacy and colonialism in South Africa and India. Many have attempted to idolize Mahatma Ghandi as a great man (which he undoubtedly was), and then to set up the concept of ahimsa as some kind of universal principle that always works everywhere every time. This idea was subsequently strengthened by the shining successes of Dr. Martin Luther King, who used the same strategy in the US. But the acceptance of ahimsa as a universal principle was a sad mistake, as people are slowly learning now. I say "slowly" because it takes a very long time for the general human population to realize that some principle may be wrong once that principle has become accepted and established. Thus ahimsa ideas continue to flourish in places like Western Europe, where they will clearly work because they work upon that breed of White man and that set of laws current in Western civilization by the start of the 20th Century. The shocking truth is that ahimsa does not work at all where Islamic and Arab populations are concerned. Nor did it work well in Peking. And yet this failure should not be shocking, because we knew all about it during WW2, but we chose to forget. Ahimsa works upon refined and Christian-educated British army officers living by a British code of honor who naturally sicken at the spilling of innocent blood when the innocent blood is being spilt by British troops. It does not work upon religiously crazed Arabs who are willing to indiscriminately kill thousands of innocent men, women, and children, and then to throw in their own lives for good measure, because as soon as they have shed innocent blood, they instantly grow thirsty for more. So the universal principle of ahimsa is a lie, and a very dangerous one that has already cost thousands of valuable lives, and the terrible truth is that the price of freedom is eternal vigillance at arms. * The False Hope of Disarming the World. "Firearms render wars less frequent and less bloody." --Dr. David Livingstone, of Africa. It may surprise the reader that the gentle Dr. Livingstone, who willingly gave his life and his all in Africa, should have penned something like the quotation above. Just imagine the immediate flaming that would surely take place on the Internet were those words to be posted today. Many people would instantly see the author as some kind of untamed and uneducated savage sadly ignorant of the shining principle of ahimsa. But Dr. Livingstone was no uneducated savage. Instead, he was an educated and critical observer writing down exactly what he saw. Today we are constantly bombarded with a steady stream of disinformation and well doctored information by our controlled news media. Sometimes this news contains blatant lies, but cleverly inserted in ways calculated not to alarm. As an example I would cite international news media reporting of recent events in Timor. Paid killers, hired and trained by the Indonesian military for terrorist operations designed to suppress and silence the unarmed East Timorese population were carefully termed "militia." Then, when 250,000 persons were driven out of their homeland and into Indonesian prison camps at gunpoint, large numbers of them being tortured and murdered along the way, these unfortunates were not even given the dignity of being called "hostages," which they clearly were. Instead, they were carefully termed "refugees." And right now the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) calls most Palestinian casualties "victims," and the Israeli army the "occupational force," as if no battle is ever really lost or won. Why doesn't the BBC also call the British army the "occupational force?" Didn't it come into England with William the Conquerer and remain ever since? It must be because of some BBC statute of limitations, but we are never told what this is. If, after reading thus far, the reader is still not convinced that even seemingly innocent lies can be deadly, then I have failed my mission in writing this book. Lies stuck idly into people's heads by themselves and their friends are already enough to be deadly. How much more dangerous, then, are lies deliberately broadcast all over the globe by the international news media? May the reader judge for him/her self. These lies keep causing untold more homicides, tortures, rapes, hopelessness, and heartbreak in order to further justify and enrich a few corrupt individuals, when just a little bit of truth might have saved many lives. But now speaking of "doctored" or distorted information, this is the kind of lie that lies buried in news texts as a hidden assumption that acts as a kind of land mine placed to trap the unwary. And one of the most commonly appearing lies of this kind, were it written out clearly in black upon white, would read something as follows: WEAPONS ARE DANGEROUS, THEREFORE DISARMING PEOPLE IS THE WAY TO BRING ABOUT SAFETY. As anyone who understands the world (and especially our founding fathers) will tell you, such a statement is not only false, but simpleminded and stupid. Yet it keeps playing over and over again throughout the international media like some broken record. And what it really means is "Disenfranchise the people while quietly arming their overlords." So what happens when we decide to disarm a particular group, for example the Irish Republican Army? Does this mean that the British government will also lay down its arms? Of course not. What it means is that the British authorities get to keep THEIR arms while the IRA loses theirs, and this means that if the government does something the IRA doesn't like, and then provides no way for the IRA to redress the problem by some means of appeal, that the IRA will then just have to accept what the government says. Now this may be okay in Great Britain, where the government is comparatively honest, enlightened, and gentle, but what happens in places like Indonesia? Here is what happens: The region now governed by what is called the "Republic of Indonesia," which has really always been a military dictatorship, and never any kind of republic at all, is a vast tapestry of cultures, languages, ancient kingdoms, and tribes stretching across more than 3,000 miles of Indian Ocean. The rulers of this vast region are a people known elsewhere as the Javanese, because they are drawn mainly from tribes on the island of Java. So the International community decides that this vast region, once ruled by the Dutch under the general name of the "Dutch East Indies," is to become a republic with its capital on Java Island, which will henceforth be known as the "Republic of Indonesia." At first there is some show of sharing power with other peoples across the region. But as is apt to happen in such circumstances, power is quickly consolidated into the hands of the Javanese. The Javanese then seize all arms from the people, of course without any international outcry because getting rid of weapons is supposed to be good, and declare that the people have no right to bear arms. Then the US starts to develop business interests in the region, and decides that it needs to protect those business interests by further arming the "Republic of Indonesia" to the teeth. The US even sets up an M16 rifle factory in one of the major cities of Java, and grants the "Republic of Indonesia" the right to manufacture M16s. But by this time, the "Republic of Indonesia" is just another way of saying "the Javanese," and any other tribe that wishes to arm or defend itself is automatically a rebellion, and its leaders guilty of sedition, and no friend of the good old USA. At last, the Javanese, who are almost all Moslem, decide that they would like to see all the rest of the region become uniformly Moslem like themselves, so they allow elements from the Middle East to come in, arm themselves, and recruit terrorists for a great Indonesian Jihad. The world hardly notices. The Jihad tries a few tricks to see what will happen. Over 100 Christian Chinese women and girls are publicly raped on the streets of Jakarta, the capital of this "Republic of Indonesia." Many of the victims are also violated with sticks, pieces of wire, broken bottles, etc., and bleed to death. Others have been tossed live into burning houses. Again the world hardly notices. Things are looking really good for the Jihad and the Javanese, so they move straight into all of the unarmed Christian areas with guns blazing. Many of the Christians are well educated, and believe in the principle of Ahimsa, so they gather in churches for prayer while their villages are burning. The Javanese then simply pour gasoline on the churches and burn them, cutting down anyone who then tries to escape. All of this works really well, almost beyond the wildest dreams of the leaders in Java, and members of the armed forces are seen shooting their weapons into the air and hugging Jihad leaders after the Christian populations have been put to flight and the villages are burning. This thing is truly wonderful, because the Christians are being killed and driven away from their homeland, and Javanese people are being moved in by the thousand to take over the land. And many Christians have been successfully forced to become Moslems and circumcised. Now the whole "Republic of Indonesia" will truly be one! Such phenomena are hardly surprising, since they result from principles understood before Machiavelli. What happens is the very personification of simplicity. Group A is heavily armed, while Group B has no arms at all, and Group A and Group B live more-or-less side-by-side. Small things happen, the people in Group A pull out their arms, and the people in Group B cower. The people in Group A notice, and experience a kind of satisfaction. They begin to see themselves as superior by virtue of the fact that they are armed, and the bullying begins. The idea of the superiority of Group A over Group B becomes more and more entrenched until finally the people of Group B are thought of as being little better than dogs. In fact, the less reserved members of Group A are often heard referring to those of Group B as dogs, and even stupid dogs. At last the people of Group A decide that they could really use the property of Group B better than the people of Group B, that the people of Group B, who are manifestly retarded ought to adopt the religion of Group A, etc., and Group B gets driven from the land and scattered or annihilated--whichever seems more convenient. Of course none of this could ever have happened if Group A and Group B had been equally armed. Any bullying attack by Group A would have been quickly rebuffed with appropriate loss of life, and the members of both groups would quickly have seen that "violence doesn't pay," and desist. So disarmament does not stop bloodshed, but equality of arms, or balance of power, surely does. The idea that disarming populations generally brings peace and stability is therefore a dangerous lie with which we are being poisoned by the media every day. Instead, its natural result is genocide. But there was another reason things were better in Africa when people were armed, and it is a social law expressed roughly as follows: THE BETTER PEOPLE ARE ARMED, THE LESS THEY WILL FIGHT. This assumption can be verified everywhere, but in case the reader fails to see it, I will give some examples. Parents fight less than their children because a fight among parents is vastly more dangerous. In general, people trained in martial arts have also been taught to avoid getting into fights. Before the terrible twentieth century, Europe was almost continuously at war, but the horrors of modern warfare and modern weapons has taught the Europeans to form the European Union. People have fought battles with stones, cudgels, spears, swords, and guns, but although the US and the Soviet Union were armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons all during the years of the cold war, no one has ever dared fight a war in which both sides used nuclear weapons, and there has never been a war between the US and the Soviet Union. * Does Violence Work? So it is clear that the better people are armed, the less they will fight, and vice versa. The next great lie in my list is the statement: VIOLENCE NEVER WORKS or VIOLENCE CANNOT WORK as we are always hearing out of the middle east. This is the worst kind of lie, because it results in limitless atrocities and protracted misery. Sometimes I almost have to smile when I hear well meaning Americans reverently echo these phrases. I wonder why, do they think, there is peace in America? Is it really impossible for them to understand that the USA is by far the most violent nation on earth? The reason there is peace and stability instead of bloodshed in America is simple. The Japanese tried to crush us, but instead we crushed them with such violence as they never dreamed. The Germans messed with our friends, and we turned Germany into a trash dump. The Russians built thousands of missiles and nuclear warheads, but were too wise ever to use them. And don't even think of invading our homeland, because our men are smart, strong, and well armed. There are plenty of firearms in every American neighborhood, and plenty of big men who know how to use them. God knows! even our woman may know how to shoot better than your best marksmen. This is the real America, the beautiful and the strong, and of it we have a right to be proud. But I am constantly hearing, especially from Christians, that violence never pays, and that America is free because its people were righteous and trust in the Lord. My friend, our forebear, George Washington, was faced with a terrible enemy against which nothing would work except violence, and he marched his ragtag, sick, starving and bleeding army barefoot across the ice of the Potamac to give the dear British the violence they needed, and that is how America got peace. And American missionaries living unscathed with native peoples being slaughtered all around them keep praising the Lord and thanking God for His protection, when the only reason they are being left alive is because of the sure threat of overwhelming American violence. In places like New Guinea they are apt to lash out against the poor natives and tell them that they should be trusting in God like the missionaries do instead of trying to defend themselves against the murdering Indonesians, and many of them are probably convinced that the natives are simply getting their just deserts for their sins against God. Most missionaries are pretty intelligent and capable people, and it seems hard to believe that they could be so wide of the mark. But their internal reference libraries are chuck full of snippets of wisdom and whole verses from the Bible, which they dote upon, read, and memorize every day. Their minds tend to run on automatic by processing information from the real world through this one reference frame, so they naturally come to a point where they see everything in terms of the words of the Bible instead of the real world, fitting themselves into the category of God's annointed and the natives into the role of dark sinners who must be destroyed. God is almighty, so it naturally follows that all these things that are happening are because of His will. They are special in the eyes of God, so they are miraculously spared while the natives go down all about them! Meanwhile Arab Terrorists continue to wreak indiscriminate violence by suicide bombers, Israel attacks the West Bank, the violence stops, the world cries, "Violence doesn't work!" the Israelis pull back, the suicide bombings start up again, and the cycle is repeated and will be repeated for as long as Israel is held back from finishing its job. The Arabs suffer from no ahimsa delusions. They perpetrated devastating violence upon us because they know violence works, and their violence has changed America. But we are more violent than they are, and by our own violence we may yet survive. Nonviolence is nothing but a lie and a delusion, and if we really believed it, America would be gone. * Commerce. Is it really true that the love of money is the root of all evil, as Jesus has said? Maybe so, but without money and the desire for money, we would not have flush toilets, hot and cold running water, toilet paper, TV, or pretty much anything else. "no permanent elevation of a people can be effected without commerce." --Dr. David Livingstone. A lot of Christians and a lot of charitable organizations would have us believe that the world needs a hand out, but this is a dangerous lie. By giving people handouts we develop dependencies instead of making it possible for people to help themselves. What is needed for the starving peoples of Asia and Africa is not another handout, but a little well-targeted, overwhelming violence to put a swift end to unreasonable and despotic regimes so that people can have a chance to crawl out of their hovels and find their ways in the world which God gave them. It is not commercialism that is wrong, but it is rather the state of spiritual blindness that keeps people from seeing things as they are, and keeps them relying blindly upon hackneyed sayings and platitudes passed down by their forebears instead of actively using their minds. Our brains are filled past overflowing with these old sayings and platitudes, and we keep spilling them all over the country wherever we go. Thank God, my American missionary parents raised me at the edge of the Moluccan rain forest where the "savages" taught me to speak Malay, so I may not have heard quite as many as you! Maybe this is what gives me this critical and analytical edge, and eyes that really see things in the real world. * Wages and Corruption. It may be thought by some people that because government employees accept bribes, they should be paid less wages. This does not apply to America, but it is true in other parts of the world. The idea is false. It is precisely by paying government employees less wages that corruption
